Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers about International A Levels, examinations, university pathways and studying at Horizon Hub.

What are International A Levels?

International AS & A Levels are advanced, subject-based qualifications offered by examination boards such as Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel. Their assessment structures differ, so always check the exact board and syllabus.

What is the difference between AS and A Level?

AS Level typically represents the first stage or a standalone qualification. A full A Level involves additional assessment. How AS results contribute to the full qualification depends on the board, syllabus and assessment route.

How do International A Levels compare with the IB Diploma?

International A Levels typically focus on a selected set of subjects. The IB Diploma combines six subject groups with a core programme. The right choice depends on interests, university prerequisites and the school’s actual offerings.

What is the difference between CAIE and Pearson Edexcel IAL?

Pearson Edexcel IAL is modular in most subjects. Cambridge International offers AS-only, staged and full A Level routes subject to syllabus rules. Examination sessions, resit arrangements and subject specifications differ.

Does Horizon Hub teach Singapore-Cambridge H1/H2 A Levels?

No. Horizon Hub specialises in Cambridge International Biology and Economics and Pearson Edexcel IAL Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.

What are grade boundaries?

Grade boundaries are the minimum marks needed for a particular grade in a specific assessment or qualification. They can vary by examination series. Historical thresholds are not reliable predictions of future grade boundaries.

What is the difference between raw marks and UMS?

A raw mark is the score awarded for a paper. Pearson modular IAL uses Uniform Mark Scale (UMS) results to aggregate eligible units. Raw marks and UMS are not interchangeable, and conversion varies by unit and examination series.

Can I retake Pearson IAL units?

Eligible units can generally be retaken, but result aggregation, specification availability and certification rules matter. For most subjects, the best mark from the two most recent attempts is used; Mathematics has special rules. Confirm the current arrangements with your exam centre.

Can I register as a private candidate?

Entry depends on the examination board, the paper and the centre accepting private candidates. Some assessments have practical or administrative requirements. Ask an approved examination centre to confirm eligibility and deadlines. Horizon Hub does not claim to register students for external examinations.

Are International A Levels accepted by universities?

Many universities recognise Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel International A Levels. Recognition does not guarantee admission: individual programmes may require specific subjects, grades, tests or qualification combinations.

How should I choose my A Level subjects?

Start with several university programmes you might pursue, record their required and preferred subjects, then compare these with your interests and your school’s offerings. Recheck the requirements for your intended entry year.

What is the make-up policy for a missed lesson?

The student may join another suitable lesson slot, subject to availability. If that is not possible, the teacher will provide the lesson materials and liaise with the student to help them catch up. Missed lessons are not refundable and do not qualify for credits, fee reductions or cash alternatives.
