What Can You Study at University with A Level Biology?

Biology develops understanding of living systems and scientific evidence, making it relevant to life-science degrees and some health-related pathways.

Biology opens more routes than medicine

A student fascinated by genetics might consider biological sciences, biotechnology or bioinformatics, not only medicine. Bioinformatics can require considerable programming and quantitative work; ecology may involve field sampling and statistical analysis. Reading real module lists reveals the daily academic work more clearly than a broad career label. Some courses require Chemistry or Mathematics alongside Biology, so programme-specific prerequisites remain essential.

What can this subject lead to?

Biology develops understanding of living systems and scientific evidence, making it relevant to life-science degrees and some health-related pathways.

The degree options below are examples of academic connections, not a promise that one A Level subject is enough to apply. Always verify required subjects, accepted international qualifications and the intended entry year on the university's official website.

  • Biological sciences and biotechnology: genetics, cells, organisms and experimental methods.
  • Ecology and environmental biology: ecosystems, evolution, conservation and field evidence.
  • Biomedical science and neuroscience: physiological and cellular processes.
  • Medicine and allied health: entry requirements are course-specific and may include Chemistry, Mathematics, tests or interviews.

Transferable skills you can develop

The value of studying a subject extends beyond university eligibility. These skills are developed through deliberate study and practice, not automatically awarded by holding the qualification.

  • Evaluating experimental design and limitations.
  • Explaining biological mechanisms clearly.
  • Interpreting data without overstating causation.

A real admissions example and an important caution

UCL Medicine requires both Biology and Chemistry for its published A Level entry route. A Level Biology alone is not sufficient for every medical programme. Students with CAIE Biology should check international qualification recognition and the precise entry year.

Singapore universities can apply different criteria to applicants with international qualifications. NUS explicitly notes that programme prerequisites may change each year. Applicants should check the correct qualification and citizenship/residency route as well as programme requirements.

How to choose your next step

  • Shortlist specific degrees at universities you are interested in.
  • Record required, preferred and recommended subjects separately.
  • Check the latest international qualification recognition and grades.
  • Ask your school's university counsellor about your application route.
  • Plan subject study and examination preparation around confirmed requirements.
